Roads: Roads into Christchurch are very simple - State Highway 1 in and out. Inland from Christchurch on the Great Alpine Highway, State Highway 73, lie the magnificent Southern Alps—only an hour from the Christchurch. Buses: Canterbury has a range of coach and bus services that provide an excellent way to travel around New Zealand. There are now services every 15 minutes on weekdays connecting popular destinations. More buses means more choice and convenience for travelling times. Train: The Costal Pacific (Christchurch-Picton) The TranzCoastal travels between the delightful port of Picton and Christchurch, the South Island’s largest city.

Cycling: Canterbury's Heli Bike Challenge is a 1300m (4200ft) vertical sprint down Mount Benmore on a narrow dirt track. The fastest participants reach the bottom in less than 40 minutes. The hills around the South Canterbury district of Waimate are starting to come alive as the area establishes itself as a New Zealand mountain bike stronghold. The region, including Waimate and the rugged hill country further inland around Waihaorunga Hakataramea, is enticing increasing numbers of cyclists to take to the hills and enjoy not only exciting trail-riding but some superb scenery, including views of New Zealand's highest mountain, Aoraki Mt Cook.
